“You wanted a good time; “They,” meaning the Party, wanted to stop you having it; you broke the rules as best you could.”
If you haven’t read George Orwell’s master piece 1984, run, do not walk, to itunes, or a book store or Amazon and get busy. The book was written in 1948 so the British author was able to personally live through the age of ideas that brought us such monsters as Hitler and Stalin. The book itself is so perfect, it has become a clique for a dystopian future controlled by an all seeing authoritarian regime in a world with no freedom. Upon my recent reading of it, I couldn’t help but notice how eerily similar the world in the book was to the post modernist left’s wish list for the world. Here is a list of 10 things I noticed:
10. Who Controls the Past…
A huge theme in 1984 is Truth. “The Party” who controls the country continuously erases the past going so far as to claim it was them who invented technology that was around before them (such as the plain) and even switches their alley/enemy dynamic in a massive war. They change all the references in the media to reflect the “new” past and it is so thorough that most characters are confused about the truth.
“This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but
to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs—to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date.”
This reminds me of the myth of the Republicans and Democrats magically switching places one day, known as “the Big Switch”. When you bring up Republicans as the party of Lincoln, the party who freed the slaves, the party that elected the first black representatives in the 1800s, the party of women’s suffrage, and the party of civil rights the response you’ll get from most American’s is “but they switched”. Never mind that the Trail of Tears, Slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, lynching, and the Klan were all done by Democrats –it’s the evil Republicans who are to blame! We are told that today’s Republicans are Democrats, and today’s Democrat’s are Republicans, by left-controlled media and liberal academia, but stop and think “Isn’t that just a little too convenient for the democrats?”
There was no switch. Anyone who stops to ask why the abolitionist Republicans suddenly went from championing civil rights to being the enemy of “the little guy” is batted away with “they switched”. Untrue. The Republicans were the party of rights for the individual then, and are now. The left has an interest in muddying the waters. The same people are the ones tearing down historical statues today don’t want you to know those are their statues.
They have even rewritten the settling of the New World to say “germ warfare” and genocide were used to steal all the land in site (simply whites vs. reds) rather than the complicated truth that it was many different countries and Indian nations making different alliances at different times, in a period of disease, war and treaties. It’s convenient because if they can corrupt the founding, they can justify having to change it to “right the wrongs”… and of course only they have the answers.
9. Hate For Capitalism
“The centuries of capitalism were held to have produced nothing of value. One could not learn history from architecture any more than one could learn it from books. Statues, inscriptions, memorial stones, the names of streets-anything that might throw light upon the past had been systemically altered.”
In 1984 capitalism is portrayed as a valueless, evil system that created nothing. A few people at the top did well on the backs of the many. Thank god “the Party” came in and righted the wrongs making everyone equal.
“The heirs of the French, English, and American revolutions had partly believed in their own phrases about the rights of man, freedom of speech, equality before the law, and the like, and have even allowed their conduct to be influenced by them to some extent. But by the fourth decade of the twentieth century all the main currents of political thought were authoritarian. The earthly paradise had been discredited at exactly the moment when it became realizable. Every new political theory, by whatever name it called itself, led back to hierarchy and regimentation. And in the general hardening of outlook that set in round about 1930, practices which had been long abandoned, in some cases for hundreds of years — imprisonment without trial, the use of war prisoners as slaves, public executions, torture to extract confessions, the use of hostages, and the deportation of whole populations — not only became common again, but were tolerated and even defended by people who considered themselves enlightened and progressive.”
Today’s core of the left is a hatred is capitalism.
The Occupy movement was hugely anti-capitalist and led by people who look like they couldn’t manage their deodorant budget let alone everyone else’s money. If you live in a big city today, or just have a art school student you needed to sit with at Thanksgiving you’re sure to get the evil eye and a lecture if you openly declare you’re a capitalist. If they could push a button a destroy the free market today, the left would. The choices these economic “hobbyists” seem to have to replace the open market is nothing or full blown socialism. This was the message that got a candidate like Bernie Sander so much steam in the 2016 primary.
It is rarely, if ever, pointed out in Hollywood-liberal movies, television, or pop culture that capitalism isn’t just a good system, it’s the greatest system humankind has figured out. Even worse, colleges teach courses on the evils of greed linking back to the unfairness of capitalism. The people who fall in line with this thinking never bother to compare it to the other side of the argument whatsoever. We are told there are poor people out there and free market and choice be damned, we must stop these “fat cats” from running a muck. The only way to do that in their eyes in massive wealth “redistribution” (stealing).
It is never explained that socialist economies don’t grow. It is never pointed out, the massive shortages in food and amenities that plaque these systems. The failures of taking from people good at something and making them equal partners with people less qualified, less motivated, or just lousy at it seems to have bad results… like Ukrainian genocide and “Great Leap Forward” mass starvation bad.
Here’s a young Michael Moore getting his ass handed to him when he decided to question capitalism with Milton Friedman. Look what an emo bitch he is.
“It had long been realized that the only secure basis for oligarchy is collectivism. Wealth and privilege are most easily defended when they are possessed jointly. The so-called ‘abolition of private property’ which took place in the middle years of the century meant, in effect, the concentration of property in far fewer hands than before: but with this difference, that the new owners were a group instead of a mass of individuals.”
Oceania, like the other 2 global powers in 1984, is a mega state. Oceania includes Britain, the US, Australia, and South America. In 1984, no state has sovereignty and all the territory is controlled by “Big Brother” of the “Inner Party”. There is no religion because nothing can be put above the state. There is no need for private enterprise because the government controls it all. All commodities, such as chocolate & gin, have a picture of “Big Brother” on the packaging. There are constant shortages of all the rationed goods. According to Orwell, this was done as an answer to the free market capitalism of the western world Now everything was controlled by the Inner party
“It was possible, no doubt, to imagine
a society in which WEALTH, in the sense of personal possessions and luxuries, should be evenly distributed, while POWER remained in the hands of a small privileged caste.”
Ask any Huffington Post reader about immigration and see what they think. Today’s post-modernist doesn’t believe in boarders. If we believe in boarders, we’re considered racist. Their new way would be no sovereignty, and financial interdependence, such as the Euro.
Another favorite trope going back to Karl Marx is “class privilege”. The new way to say “Haves” vs. “Have Nots” is “Check Your Privilege!”. In today’s context, “privilege” means if you’re succeeding in anyway, that can only mean the ethnic group, gender group, or sexual orientation you belong to indirectly got you there. These accusers can’t prove it, but simply need to point out you having something someone else doesn’t means you owe the collective.
“The older kind of Socialist, who had been trained to fight against something called ‘class privilege’, assumed that what is not hereditary cannot be permanent. He did not see that the continuity of an oligarchy need not be physical, nor did he pause to reflect that hereditary aristocracies have always been short lived, whereas adoptive organizations such as the Catholic Church have sometimes lasted for hundreds or thousands of years. The essence of oligarchical rule is not father-to-son inheritance, but the persistence of a certain world-view and a certain way of life, imposed by the dead upon the living.”
Every time you hear the word “equality” come out of a liberals mouth, what they really mean is “collectivism”. In this new, collectivist “utopia” who would make the rules? The solution is always bureaucracy. Government workers lead by a union, controlled by life long politicians, propagated by journalists and media types, all instructed by career academics because the worst thing you can be is a self made business man in a perfect, boarder-less, perfectly equal society. Business equals greed in a collectivist society. And who runs the Stalinist world of 1984….
“The new aristocracy was made up for the most part of bureaucrats, scientists, technicians, trade-union organizers, publicity experts, sociologists, teachers, journalists and professional politicians”
7. New Speak
“A word contains its opposite in itself. Take “good”, for instance. If you have a word like “good”, what need is there for a word like “bad”? “Ungood” will do just as well—better, because it’s an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of “good”, what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like “excellent” and “splendid” and all the rest of them? “Plusgood” covers the meaning; or “doubleplusgood” if you want something stronger still.”
Choosing your own words is not a luxury the characters in 1984 have. They speak a language called “new speak” using only words deemed necessary by the inner party. The idea is after a few generations, controlling words will control people thoughts as well.
“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.”
The term politically correct was first coined Soviets in the late 20s. “The N. Word,” “The R.Word,” The T. Word,” “the OTHER F. Word” have all become euphemisms to replace the more offensive slurs they represent, insisted upon by liberal academics, and rooted in communism. It is dressed as just being respectful, but the boundaries are then pushed beyond simple slurs: African American replaces black, humankind instead of mankind, and person of size rather than fat; all are progressive ways of telling the rest of us what to say, and how to think. It may seems harmless but would the left want other words banned? Remember Ban “Bossy”:
“Pushy,” “Stubborn”; isn’t it funny how the people who tell us “words matter” are always the ones trying to get rid of them? Words do matter, and picking your own words is import to express your own ideas and communicate the way you see the world. In Canada, calling someone by the wrong pronoun can get you fired or sued. Gender pronouns are now going to be monitored by the government and could lead to consequences if someone is “misgendered” (which is completely at the digression of the person being spoken to, at any given moment depending on how they might feel). This includes a list of 70 different pronouns including xe, zer, and hir in their “newspeak”. Professor Jordan Peterson is a Canadian fighting to use his own words in a world controlled by the left today:
6. Freedom is Slavery
The only way Big Brother can control the people, is by convincing them that any world of rules the inner party has, is a far better life than what can happen without the inner party. The people are convinced that Big Brother is the only thing that stands between them and chaos. Everyone’s life decisions must be made for them by the inner party for their own good.
If there is anything western civilization is meant to serve it’s freedom. Making choices and living with the consequences, good or bad, is part of what we agree to by being Americans (and free). The ability to choose what’s right for yourself and your family is the core of our identity, yet there are people who feel you don’t know what’s best for you, they know what’s best for you.
An example of this is the gun debate. The United States has a right to bear arms, but that sometimes means we have to deal with people who abuse that freedom. The left believes if they can just remove that freedom, they would make the world completely safe. It involves submitting and trusting the bureaucrats the left would like in place to always do the right thing, and never abuse the power further than they’re already abusing it; forever and ever. Socialism seems to have a very controlling relationship with guns. Perhaps that’s why those are the first governments to go too far:
5. No Objective Truth
The “2 + 2 = 5” becomes a reoccurring reference in 1984. The main character, Winston, is seen as a “slow learner” and tortured for not understanding how 2+2=5 is true if the inner party tells him it is.
The world we are now told to embrace is where changing genders is as simple as deciding so. Biological fact in gender difference is irrelevant cause the left told us it is. Questioning any transgender people on their mental health is “wrong” and “bigoted”. Not wanting a child to get hormone replacements is cruel.
Wouldn’t this prompt us to ask, why stop at gender, what about race?
And why stop there? What about age?
What about a person who’s 5’2′ who feels like the center of the Knicks? What about a person with a heart condition who feels like they can cure it with ice cream? What if your neighbor decides they are you? Questioning facts about extraordinary claims seems to just anger the new left.
4. Big Brother is Watching
“It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself__anything that carried the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.”
This should make us a little worried about the facial recognition software on your iPhone X. Most of us know by now, it is no coincidence when we google “watches” suddenly ads for watches come up in our facebook feeds. Our patterns are being recorded constantly, and when they aren’t, we are voluntarily offering our thoughts which get worked into an algorithm. The issue is, some people have the “wrong” thoughts according to the people who run Google, Twitter, and Facebook which is beginning to result in people being kicked of certain platforms. This means that believing the wrong things, may mean many of us can’t use social media for brand-building and networking anymore. Some of us have already learned to self censor, to reevaluate how we express ourselves so it’s acceptable to our platforms.
CNN, ABC, MSNBC, New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, and many others will deliberately not cover news that is coherent with a certain world view. Liberal giant, Google, has been dabbling in changing definitions such as “fascist” which is now defined as expressly “right wing” when historical that has never been the case. How many people will soon be hearing this on their iTelescreens?
3. Two Minutes of Hate
“The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining”
Two minutes of hate in the 1984 world was a daily occurrence. Anti-party propaganda was played on a screen each day for everyone to scream, shout down, and generally go nuts to prove how loyal they were. It showed everyone around them how virtuous they were while creating channels in their own brains leaving a permanent predisposition to respond viscerally to hearing any unapproved ideas.
“The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out: ‘Swine! Swine! Swine!’, and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen.”
There is no shortage of people screaming in the streets at things they don’t like this past year. “Black Lives Matter,” Antifa, and just plain feminists have made losing their minds and silencing opposition par for the coarse…
Having a temper tantrum when they see things they don’t like is reasonable and encouraged. It’s meant to intimidate anyone who disagrees, and firm up the believers. If you don’t scream with them, and express your own hate loud enough, you become their enemy. Mob rule is now what people want to live by, and I’m sure there are people who find it easier to go with the crowd than be the object of their hate.
“Always yell with the crowd, that’s what I say. It’s the only way to be safe.”
At it’s worst, the new “2 minutes of Hate” has become the impulse to shout down anyone who disagrees with the entirely leftist dogma. Free speech is dead if you can’t hear above the air-horns and screaming. That’s just fine with these performance artists:
2. Anti-Sex League
In Orwell’s world, sex is heavily monitored and taboo unless approved. Sex between Winston and Julia was the ultimate act of disobedience. All sex is done in secret, and sex between “approved” married couples is seen as your “duty to the party”.
“There was a direct, intimate connection between chastity and political orthodoxy. For how could the fear, the hatred, and the lunatic credulity which the Party needed in its members be kept at the right pitch except by bottling down some powerful instinct and using it as a driving force? The sex impulse was dangerous to the Party, and the Party had turned it to account.”
The lack of sexual openness leads to resentment from the main character to women. Winston was symbolically castrated by the party.
“He hated her because she was young and pretty and sexless, because he wanted to go to bed with her and would never do so …”
All the charater’s are even required to wear coveralls to appear more sexless. Women are simply “comrades,” and men are not permitted to look at them in a sexual way. Julia’s big act of rebellion at one point is to put on make up, a dress and stockings to accentuate her femininity.
1. Obedience isn’t Enough
“Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”
The cruelest, most unforgivable actions by Big Brother is their brainwashing of the main character. They explain that they don’t want to just kill him, and they don’t want him to simply fall in line… he needs to believe and love their lies. Winston needs to be a completely orthodox believer, and “Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.”
“We do not merely destroy our enemies, we change them.”
The cruelest part of today’s leftist Orthodoxy, is if you step out of line even for an instant they threaten to ruin your life, everything you worked for, and everything you are until you become their personal puppet. Have an unpopular opinion, tell an off color joke, say something they don’t deem sensitive and you will be torn to pieces… unless you gravel hard enough to convince everyone you are owned, body and soul, by progressive ideology and practice it without question:
No matter what your previous record of liberal orthodoxy might be, they will still dress you down after your apology. The looming specter of total loss is always hanging above your head.
Once you’re in the club of “progressiveness” the biggest thing used against you is kicking you out. It’s a club full of people judging and hating you, waiting for us to screw up so they can attack. It’s a club that’s wrong, and still, no one wants to lose their membership. They’re in our heads, making us say “differently abled” instead of handicapped. They’re what makes us think twice before telling a dirty joke at work to make the day go easier or scared to talk to a girl. They’re what makes us not say anything bad about Islam, while they run down Christianity. We have all learned to self censor out of fear the progressive mob will cost us our jobs the way they did with Alex Caprio and Martina Markota. Or threaten and harass us, like when anyone writes a piece on the Proud Boys that isn’t unfair. Their game is thought control, and the only way to win is to not play.
